A programme developing geographical knowledge, understanding, and skills across physical and human environments, fieldwork investigation, and the critical evaluation of real-world issues.

We use an active-learning approach encouraging students to think like geographers, making connections between people, places, and processes at local, national, and global scales. Skills are developed through a communicative, enquiry-based approach structured around three parallel strands: Living with the Physical Environment (Paper 1), Challenges in the Human Environment (Paper 2), and Geographical Applications (Paper 3) which draws together fieldwork skills and issue evaluation.

The Earth’s surface is restless. From plate tectonics to the processes at plate margins, the focus falls on where earthquakes and eruptions strike — and why people live in their shadow. Chile and Nepal reveal how wealth shapes disaster response, while monitoring, prediction, protection and planning show how risk can be managed.

Weather hazards

From global atmospheric circulation to the violent power of tropical storms. Work traces storms like Typhoon Haiyan and asks how climate change may reshape them, before the Somerset floods bring extreme weather — and its management — home to the UK.

A story written in ice cores and tree rings. Work weighs natural causes against human ones, explores the effects on people and planet, and ends with management: mitigation and adaptation in a world already changing.

ecosystems

A UK pond reveals how producers, consumers and decomposers connect — and how changing one component unbalances a whole system. The view then widens to the world’s great ecosystems.

tropical rainforests

The planet’s richest ecosystems, and its most threatened. The focus falls on interdependence, adaptation and biodiversity, with Malaysia illustrating the drivers of deforestation — and the strategies that might secure the rainforest’s future.

coastal landscapes

Where land meets sea, change never stops. Work explores the processes that sculpt the coast and the landforms they create, illustrated at Swanage — before weighing hard engineering, soft engineering and managed retreat, with Lyme Regis showing coastal management in practice.

Summer

Life at the extremes. Work explores how plants, animals and people adapt to scarcity, with the Thar Desert showing both opportunity and challenge — before turning to desertification and the strategies that can hold it back.

southwold investigations

Geography leaves the classroom. Two enquiries on the Suffolk coast — coastal processes and gentrification — put skills into practice with real data and real questions.

river landscapes

Following a river from source to sea — the processes and landforms of the River Tees, from waterfalls to flood plains. The focus then shifts to flood risk, hydrographs, and the costs and benefits of management, with Banbury as the example in action.

resources and energy

Food, water and energy underpin everything, yet their supply is anything but equal. The focus sharpens on energy: rising demand, the impacts of insecurity, and strategies for supply — from natural gas’s trade-offs to Chambamontera’s micro-hydro scheme.

Summer

revision & Exams

The final stretch. Revision is active: case studies revisited, exam questions practised, skills sharpened. Retrieval and application over re-reading — knowing the content is the start; deploying it under exam conditions is the goal.

All candidates sit three externally assessed GCSE exam papers at the end of Year 11 and are eligible for grades 9–1.
