GCSE Biology
Exam board: aqa
A programme developing scientific knowledge, practical skills, and analytical thinking across the breadth of living systems — from the molecular machinery of cells to the interdependence of whole ecosystems.
We use an active-learning approach encouraging students to think like biologists, asking how and why living things work and connecting structure to function across every scale of life. Skills are developed through an enquiry-based approach structured around the two papers of the course. Paper 1: cells, organisation, infection and response, and bioenergetics. Paper 2: homeostasis, inheritance, variation, evolution and ecology. Required practicals and skills to work scientifically are woven throughout.

transport in cells Nothing lives in isolation. Work explores how substances move — diffusion, osmosis and active transport — why small organisms manage without specialised systems, and how fish and mammals evolved exchange surfaces and transport systems to keep every cell supplied. |

From a single fertilised egg to a complex organism. Work explores cell division, differentiation and stem cells, why size forces organisms to specialise, and how the digestive and circulatory systems work together to nourish the body. |
Plant Cell Organisation
How plants get everything they need from light, air and soil. Work explores the adaptations behind photosynthesis, the factors that limit its rate, and the twin transport systems — xylem and phloem — that move water and food through the plant. |

What makes us ill, and how we fight back. Work explores the lifestyle and environmental factors behind non-communicable disease, how pathogens spread, and the body’s defences — from skin to the immune system and vaccination — before turning to how plants resist attack. |

Variation and Evolution
Why no two of us are alike — and what that difference makes possible. Work explores the causes of variation, the struggle for existence and natural selection, the evidence Darwin and Wallace drew on, and the forces, from selective breeding to mass extinction, that reshape life over time. |

Life in connection. Work explores how energy flows and is lost through food chains, how living and non-living factors shape communities, how human activity threatens biodiversity, and how carbon, water and nutrients cycle endlessly through an ecosystem. |

All candidates sit two externally assessed IGCSE exam papers at the end of Year 11 and are eligible for grades 9–1.
